1) Cut the striker pads off of lots of matchbooks (Diamond king-size are best)
2) Soak them in acetone, after about 10 minutes start scraping the red off.  When done siphon the acetone off, scrape up the red gunk and set aside to dry.
3) After collecting enough and fairly dry put the stuff in a glass dish and add enough HCL and H2SO4 to saturate.  It will smoke and it won't smell great but when it finishes reacting it will be clean.
4) Dilute with distilled water, then filter under vacuum or wait as gravity takes a long time.
5) Let dry under mild heat from light source and it will be more than clean enough to fire off a rxn.

Roughly 1 gram per box of matches.

I'll start!

Red Phosphorus aka R/P... Red P...Red Phosphorus-metal (though it's not a metal at all)...is used in the synthesis of methamphetamine. The most common method being the reduction of ephedrine (or pseudo-ephedrine)along with iodine (I2).

R/P has only a few legitimate uses in industry. It appears in small amounts in fireworks, some flame retardants, the strike pads of matchbooks and the strike caps of road flares.

It has been asserted that this substance was intentionally left off the list of "scheduled" chemicals, so that it's purchase could be used to track clandestine laboratories. Whether true or not, anyone who orders this element should be prepared to be scrutinized by the DEA.

Procuring "over the counter" is both tedious and costly. Road flares are very expensive. Matchbooks (NOT THE MATCHES THEMSELVES/NOT THE BUTTON ON THE FLARE!)require lots of time and patients. Both products create an inferior, diluted result. But sadly these are the last alternatives.
 
No one has posted a reliable "grams/box of matchbooks" or "gram/road flare" formula, due to variables in  manufacturers and different techniques of purification. 

What matches/flares are the best? What should I look for? Do all matchbooks have R/P? Are the boxes from wooden matches better?
So far, all strikers have R/P. Because of a billion different variables, you have to use your own judgement to figure which is best for you. R/P is a maroon/terracotta colored powder. In strikers, it will be mixed with glue, sulfur, glass, and you'll probably also have some paper. Look at...color...thicker pads...suface area...price...availablility.

well anyways never needed this stuff though perhaps its easy to crystl up.....ant chem book outa have pictures and beter books will have better ways to make this stuff from rocks and stuff I suppose it all in the they used to make gunpowder from bufffalo bones whatever?

So if there was .001 percent that proally maning there is something in there.....humm so if I pour out a bottle of this stuff then evaporate .999 percent of it I am figuring that this might be a ussable method for all enjoy?

I doubt it however whats the dif between rp and whit p  Its really the same ellement or is it something drastically different anyways I dont really care anywayas...

Red phosphorus is a non-metal that is made from white phosphorus. White phosphorus is explosive in the prescense of oxygen. Under water= okay. Rp has a maroon looking color. It burns in a flash. Chem supply houses sell it in 1 through 10 pound blocks. in reaction used as a catalyst..any otha questions?

White phos burns skin like a mother *ucker and wont wash off it is picked, scraped or with tissue cut off.  Ever heard of white phos bombs.  There the ones in the news and movies that shoot white trailers off into the air everywhere when the bomb blows.  Takes more people and time to care for phos patients than dead.  Talk about a morphine drainer.  Take it from a two tour VietNam medic.  Big problem there was our troops got more of our airforces white phos than the other side.  If your brave or stupid enough the right amount of heat turns white phos into red.  The wounded prefered the burnt in red as the burning stopped as soon as the red was covered the white did not stop burning until it used up all the carbon material (ie bone and tissue) or until it was physically removed through machanical action as mentioned above.  They say there are more advances in technology, medicince and chemistry during 1 year of war than during 50 years of peace.  Dexedrine in every flight bag, aid bag, survival bag, and 50-ml bottles of 1-g per ml. in every combat medics bags. More popular than morphine.  The army considered even putting speed tabs in the c-rations along with the cigarettes and gum.  The first long range patrol (freeze dried rattions had 5 dexedrine in a foiled plastic wrapper hot glued to the inside of each box the ration came in.  Better combat through cemicals.  Gee, I wonder why I got hep A, B, and C over there and still consider speed a normal part of life 28 years later.

  phosphorus trichloride; manuf fertilizers, pesticides, incendiary shells, smoke bombs, tracer bullets.

Beschreibung/Eigenschaften

Roter Phosphor ist ein dunkelrotes Pulver, welches aufgrund seiner hygroskopischen Eigenschaften stets etwas Luftfeuchtigkeit anzieht und daher zusammenklumpen kann, oder es handelt sich um kompakte, rotbraune, oftmals metallisch glänzende Stücke mit muscheligem Bruch.

Diese scheinbar amorphe ("gestaltlose" *) Modifikation des Phosphors ist - im Gegensatz zum wachsartigen weißen Phosphor - ungiftig und läßt sich nicht in Schwefelkohlenstoff auflösen. Beide Erscheinungsformen sind nicht wasserlöslich, der rote Phosphor löst sich auch nicht in organischen Lösungsmitteln. Roter Phosphor ist zwar bei allen Temperaturen die beständigere Form des Elements Phosphor. Kühlt man jedoch Dämpfe von rotem Phosphor sehr rasch ab, so entsteht weißer Phosphor als sog. metastabile Modifikation (unbeständige Zwischenstufe beim Übergang in den energieärmsten Zustand, siehe unten). Beim Erhitzen von rotem Phosphor auf ca. 400 °C entzündet sich das Pulver und verbrennt unter Bildung eines dichten, weißen und ätzenden Rauches von Phosphorpentoxid. Die Dichte beträgt ca. 2,16 g/cm3.

* Die Interpretation des Begriffs "amorph" in diesem Sinne ist nicht ganz korrekt, da die Phosphoratome in Form eines mehr oder weniger geordneten, dreidimensionalen Netzwerks angeordnet sind, dessen Ordnungszustand von den Bedingungen bei der Herstellung - nämlich Temperatur und Temperzeit - abhängig ist [Lit. x]. Jedes P-Atom ist dabei mit drei anderen P-Atomen verbunden. Rotes Phosphorpulver ist mikrokristallin-hexagonal. Violetter Phosphor, auch HITTORFscher Phosphor genannt, kristallisiert in einer monoklinen Schichtstruktur und entsteht beim 8-14tägigen Tempern bei 500 °C. Diese Abart weicht in Dichte und Struktur vom "normalen" roten Phosphor ab (Dichte = 2,36; Sublimationspunkt 620 °C).

Phosphor tritt in seinen Verbindungen vorwiegend als kovalenter Bindungspartner in Erscheinung, wobei entsprechend der Konfiguration der Außenelektronen (3 s2 3 p3) drei kovalente Bindungen gebildet werden können (Beispiel: PCl3). Allerdings ist es dem Element durch Entkopplung des s-Elektronenpaars und Hybridisierung zu sp3d auch möglich, fünf kovalente und gleichberechtigte Bindungen einzugehen (Beispiel: PCl5), was eine trigonal-bipyramidale Anordnung zur Folge hat.

Darstellung

Erhitzt man weißen Phosphor auf etwa 250 °C unter Ausschluß von Sauerstoff, so entsteht roter Phosphor:

Demonstrationsversuch (nur vom Lehrer oder Dozenten auszuführen!): Man trocknet ein kleines Stückchen weißen Phosphor mit Hilfe von Filtrierpapier und unter Vermeidung jeder Berührung mit der Hand. Der Phosphor wird in ein sorgfältig getrocknetes Reagenzglas aus DURAN-Glas überführt, mit einem Wattepfropfen locker verschlossen und unter dem Abzug kräftig erhitzt. Zunächst beobachtet man eine Feuererscheinung, da ein Teil des weißen Phosphors mit dem im Reagenzröhrchen vorhandenen Sauerstoff reagiert. Danach allerdings, wenn der Sauerstoffanteil verbraucht ist, fängt der Phosphor ruhig zu sieden an. Die Phosphordämpfe schlagen sich an den kalten Glaswandungen in Form von rotem Phosphor ab. Die verbleibende Phosphorschmelze färbt sich ebenfalls rot.

Die beschriebenene Umwandlung wird durch den Zusatz geringer Mengen von Iod katalytisch beschleunigt; sie kann dann bereits in der Kälte stattfinden. Löst man weißen Phosphor beispielsweise in Schwefelkohlenstoff auf und fügt der Lösung etwas Iod zu, so bildet sich beim vorsichtigen Verdunsten des Lösungsmittels (oder beim Erwärmen der Mischung im geschlossenen Reagenzrohr) roter Phosphor ab. Auch eine intensive Bestrahlung mit Licht verwandelt weißen Phosphor - selbst bei Raumtemperatur - allmählich in roten Phosphor. Beim Übergang der weißen zur roten Form wird eine nicht unerhebliche Wärmemenge frei.

Da bei der großtechnischen Darstellung des Elements Phosphor zunächst weißer Phosphor anfällt, muß die rote Form durch Erhitzung in abgeschlossenen Kugelmühlen erzeugt werden. Während 24 Stunden setzt man den Phosphor dabei Temperaturen von 270 bis 275 °C aus.

Anwendung

Roter Phosphor ist in den Reibflächen von Zündholzschachteln enthalten. In der präparativen Chemie wird er zur Herstellung von Phosphorverbindungen wie Phosphorhalogeniden und Phosphiden bzw. als Halogenüberträger benutzt (HBr-Synthese). Die organische Synthese macht ebenfalls in manchen Fällen von rotem Phosphor Gebrauch, beispielsweise bei der Darstellung von Iodalkanen aus dem entsprechenden Alkohol (Alkanol) und Iod. Während der Reaktion entsteht aus Phosphor und Iod Phosphortriiodid, PI3, der eigentliche Reaktionspartner des Alkohols.

Gefahren

Roter Phosphor ist leicht entzündlich. Zwar ist der Stoff nicht wie weißer Phosphor selbstentzündlich, doch er verbrennt unter Entwicklung von stark reizenden Brandprodukten (Phosphorpentoxid). Das Einatmen aufsteigender Brandprodukte ist daher unbedingt zu vermeiden; Demonstrationsexperimente, bei denen solche entstehen, sind in einem gut ziehenden Abzug vorzunehmen. Beim Verbrennen von Phosphor besteht die Gefahr des Verspritzens brennender Phosphorklümpchen, die tiefe Brandwunden verursachen und die Kleidung entflammen können. Sollten Phosphorstäube oder Brandprodukte trotz Sicherheitsmaßnahmen eingeatmet worden sein, so ist der Betroffene an die frische Luft zu bringen und ein Arzt hinzuzuziehen.

Bei Versuchen mit Phosphor sollte immer ein mit Wasser gefüllter Löscheimer bereitstehen und weiterhin eine mit Wasser gefüllte Schale oder Metallschüssel, in die man notfalls kleinere Geräte hineinwerfen kann. Schutzbrille mit Seitenschutz und oberer Augenraumabdeckung ist Pflicht, bei Gefahr des Verspritzens von Phosphorteilchen Arbeitshelm mit Gesichtsvollschutz.

 Warnung: Gemische von Phosphor mit brandfördernden Stoffen (u.a. mit Permanganaten, Chloraten, Nitraten, Peroxiden) sind reibungs-, stoß- und druckempfindlich, können sich spontan von selbst entzünden oder unberechenbar explodieren. Für die Herstellung und den Umgang mit derartigen explosionsfähigen Mischungen gelten in Deutschland die Bestimmungen des Gesetzes über explosionsgefährliche Stoffe (SprengG), sie dürfen demzufolge von Personen, die die darin genannten Voraussetzungen nicht erfüllen, nicht hergestellt und nicht verwendet werden.

Beim Arbeiten mit Phosphor - wie beim Arbeiten mit Gefahrstoffen allgemein - sind die gesetzlichen Vorgaben, Versuchsvorschriften und Sicherheitsvorkehrungen (Arbeitsschutz- und Unfallverhütungsvorschriften) streng einzuhalten und die Einsatzmengen so klein als irgend möglich zu halten. Es sind ausschließlich Vorschriften wissenschaftlich anerkannter, moderner Literatur zu verwenden; von eigenen "Experimenten" und unzeitgemäßen Vorschriften ist unbedingt Abstand zu nehmen.

A: Yes, but not without some degree of risk, either via the entity supplying it to you or via oversight by the DEA  which monitors its production and distribution


Q.  Is it true RP can be found on matches.
A:  No.  The actual RP is found on the striker pads of matchbook  (MB) covers and boxes.  The matches themselves contain no RP. 

Q. Do all MB striker pads contain RP.  Yes, but in varying degrees. Look for pads that  are reddish,  muddy ocre,  or maroon in color.  Ones that are brownsih-black contain much less of the substance. 

Q:  Yes, but but is it true that it requires thousands of striker pads just to obtain a few grams of RP?
A:  Yes, but freedom and peace of mind know no price or amount of effort.

Q: How can the RP be extracted from the pads?
A: Primarily  with the aid of solvents - most notably -acetone.  There have been numerous methodologies developed. . .

The only difference betwen 'dope' and 'medicine' is a prescription pad !

It might be noted that, rather than using something like a knife or other flat edged implement to scrape the matchbooks after soaking in acetone, simply rubbing the strikers gently between thumb and forefinger of a latex gloved hand works pretty well to remove the rP with a minimal amount of actual effort on the part of the would be phosphorus gatherer.

Additionally, the number of matchbooks necessary to a decent yield will only increase as industry struggles to comply with govenrmental requests to make manufacturing of methamphetamine more difficult.

Smoke bombs contain white phosphorus to some extent. Most fireworks don't contain allotropic phosphorus anymore. It's almost always phosphorus sesquisulfide: P4S3 or so I'm told.

This may have already been mentioned, but I did'nt feel like reading the whole thread to find out, so if it has, sorry. There has been speculation in the past that tracer ammunition could be a viable source for RP. Well, from what I've gathered, the answer is yes and no. It was my impression that tracer rounds used RP to charge the slug, instead of gunpowder, so it might supply a reasonable quantity. Well as it turns out, they don't, instead they have a tip which is coated w/ rp mixed into a hard substrate (like rp and super glue mixed together). And the amout is very small, suprising to me as they shine brightly when fired in the middle of the day. I scraped it off of about 50 - .223 cal rounds, and while it cleaned up nicely w/ acetone, it was'nt enough to sneeze at (~.15g). I then obtained 50 rounds of 30mm tracers, scraped 'em, toned 'em, got 9gs, did that RP/I/E thing w/ the usual proportions and got a ~60% return of not bad shukky. So it is possible, the $300 price of the 30mm rnds makes it less cost effective (gross understatement), but it is possible.

BTW anyone in the market for 30mm ammo?

SWIW agrees chemgrrl:For what it might be worth....SWIW always leaned toward the hexagonal shaped RP pads on the Kithcen Safety stickmatches in the box...two strikers per box(1 Inch= 2.54 Centimeters x 4.5 Inches = 11.43000 Centimeters). He use to use the finger rub technique....then he just took a toothbrush and heated the tip just below the brushes and bent the TB to an "L" shape, eliminating the skin defatting! With the strips in the 30%acetone 70% Denatured alc solution, just brush the RP off.... With the little striker jobbies it might be somewhat cumbersome though...

Sprics post stated that RP was sol. in Phosphorus Tribromide.KZD has never heard of this stuff. Im dreaming I could just cut up my striker pads and pull all that LUFFley, LUFFly  are-pee OvA. But,......WTF is it??? and WHERE THE FUCK do you get it?

This is my first post, so if you flame this intrepid lass, please make sure I am adequately humbled else I may ask an equally stupid question down the line. I can see that this faq has come full circle. Unobtanium, if it helps, as a newbee i got lost when the german discourse, ammunition, and bombs were introduced. But hey, what do I know?

wareami, I, too, like the looks of those particular kitchen matches. Although you provided the measurement of the kitchen strike pads, how does it relate to the smaller pads that everyone seems to be speaking of?  ie., If one uses 500 mbs to yield 3-4 gms, how many of the kitchen would one use to yield an equal amount? Plus, there are so many methods that turn up in a TFSE regarding the extraction of rp using the exact ingredients with some variation (ex. muriatic and/or sulfuric but always acetone) it is difficult to decipher which is most reliable and facile. So, using 70% de-alc and 30% acetone method, how is it extracted wareami? Generally I mean. Thanks.

The method you mention works fine for removal.
Few rinses,bit of acid,and away you go.
Best try a few of the methods proposed (most of them work to some degree)before you ask to many questions on this topic.(The bees can get a bit ratty if ya know what I mean)all the info you could ever want is already here.

What is a strike anywhere match? A strike anywhere match will ignite when struck against any rough surface. Despite this characteristic, most users strike them on the rough surface provided on the side of the box.

What is the colored matchhead made of? The head of a match is a complex mixture of chemicals. Aztec: My bad...I'm a little behind. To answer your Q regarding the yields...that would bee hard as it was months ago and SWIW hasn't needed to go that route for a while! It was slightly less yieldwise compared to time taken with the smaller jobbies. SWIW always prefered these over the small ones even if they did cost more because of the ease in handling! The 70%denat 30%acetone did the initial removal then just tone was used in 3 rinses afterwards to carry the glue completely away.

Not all strikers contain r/p. M/B mfg can bee done without any r/p at all. Currently it is being done in some states. It's one of three items needed to make meth. That is true only because of simplisity for untrained bees. Now that r/p has been explorted to death, i'm sure with the amount of intrest that new easy methods will pop up. When it does hopefully bees will keep a lid on it for awile anyway. There was a time that stick matches had P in them the tip was a solid color. The problem was they would ignite in a persons pocket. Tracer bullets are illagal because they can start fires very easy. The military (navy)used them mostly for antiaircraft 50cal. Most cases every tenth round was a tracer made by coating the slug with W/P not R/P. W/P also known as willy peater in NAM. Places that sell stuff for catering trucks won't cause suspicion. The reason for cutting the striker close as possable is to prevent any extra glue,paint and whatever crap you need to avoid. Swim has found that by placing about 75 strips in a wide mouth jar with 1/2 acetone,mek or laquerthiner and 1/2 toul or exyl after 15 min has passed with some shaking the r/p just about falls off. You might take a long paint brush (with no paint on the handle) to hit the spots that don't fall off. The stuff that remains is not worth your time filter out the liquid and toss the strips in the fireplace.

Those old strike anywhere and will light matches had a white tip and were called Lucifer's.
Swim has gotten a dollar bill used as a striker to lite a match so there are alternatives to rp.
Have a question for an enlightened bee(no pun intended).
Have 93% H2SO4 on hand and think that is too concentrated
too add to HCL to burn glue and paper from rp.Probably would
oxidize it.What would bee a good % of sulf. to use or am
I beeing overly paranoid.Have always used hcl,acetone,heat and DH2O for procurring beefore but want to try something new & see if there is an improvement.I think Foxey mentioned in one of his posts a percentage but unable to find.
