Methylene Blue

Materials:
- Methylene Blue
- Absolute Ethanol
- Potassium Hydroxide
- Deionized Water
Supplies:
- 4 x 1 litre bottle with screw-top lid
- 1000 mL graduated cylinder
- 4000 mL Erlenmeyer flask
- Scale
- Stirbar
- Magnetic stirrer
- Filter paper
- Funnel
- Gloves
- Dust/Mist respirator
- Apron
- Safety goggles or eye wear
Method Stepwise:
- Put on personal safety apparel.
- Weigh out 9.0 g of Methylene Blue and put into the 4000 mL Erlenmeyer
flask.
- Add 900 ml of Absolute Alcohol.
- Weigh out 0.3 g of Potassium Hydroxide and add to the Erlenmeyer flask.
- Add 3000 mL of Deionized Water.
- Add a stirbar to the flask and place onto a magnetic stirrer.
- Allow the solution to dissolve for 2 to 3 days.
- When dissolved filter into four one-litre bottles.
- Label the bottles with the required information (i.e. name of solution,
date made, expiry date, preparer's initials).
- Store at room temperature for up to one year.
