Speed cameras are not intended to improve road safety, otherwise they wouldn't be hidden behind trees, bushes, and road signs.
They are intended to extort yet more money from drivers who don't know where they are.

( or whoever ) has deemed it a really good idea to put traffic lights on the main trunk route from London to the Anglia region, and whilst they are at it, have decided that it would make a spiffing place to erect a couple of loot gathering devices. Unmarked Police Bike		Unmarked police bike also active in the Suffolk area. (Separate from the Norfolk one) It's been spotted! Not so unmarked as Anglia News would have us believe.
RAC bike		There is also a white and green marked RAC bike quite often seen on the A14 as well.
Haverhill		Watch out if you go fo a drink at the White horse inn at Withersfield near Haverhill. police can be regulary hidden up a dark entrance to a field just 20 yrds away from pub.

		An update on some of the movements in Suffolk. (03/01/00) *Auto-Vision* They currently have 3 fiesta vans, two blue, one red, set up for "Auto- Vision" Typical situation is to have the van, parked up on a grass verge pointing in the direction of travel, with 3 strips across one side of the road. http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/2195/speedtrap_gatso.html - Gives a good description of how it works. If you see the strips in the road with a post about 18" tall at the side, these have been installed by the council for police use, and are a good indication of where the traps are. The most common place for these sites are in 30mph limits where the council have reduced the speed limit.
		Suffolk Police seem to like to use the more mobile Gatso's which aren't so easy to spot, but they are mainly located on the single carriageway roads like the A140, Ipswich to Norwich, and the A12 from Ipswich to Lowestoft.

A1065, Lakenheath	60	By RAF Lakenheath main gates it is 40mph. Police wait just past the sign. - Boydie Flashing 'Slow Down' sign RAF Lakenheath gate 1. Just prior to the 40mph section near the gate (coming from Brandon) is a 'new' flashing 40mph warning sign. However, it is well before the actual speed zone and gives you time to slow down. A14, Ipswich	70	Also look out on the A14 Felixstowe bound carriageway Sproughton interchange, The Traffic police use the VASCAR system on what they call the Golden Mile, they sit mid-way up the hill and time you going over two changes in road surface at the bottom of the dip, by the time most drivers have spotted the car they brake but it is too late because they have already been timed and are pulled over in the next lay-by.!!

A14, Felixstowe	70	Sometimes sitting on the Trimley roundabout bridge. VASCAR markings on East Bound road surface - zaax 31/1/00
A14, Westbound	70	Past A11 junction, in the lay-by at the bottom of the hill. They use a handheld radar or similar to check speeds as you come down the hill, and are normally hard to spot (often I've seen the marked car conveniently obscured by an unmarked vehicle)

A47		I noticed your list of police hiding places. If it's of any use they sit with an in-car laser on the westbound slip road of the A47 at the Trowse intersection. I know :
B1103	30	Coming down the hill from Burwell into Exning near Newmarket.
Landseer Road, Ipswich	30	Down the first hill into town, just past Holbrook Road turn off. (before HGV test Centre - ed) 3/1/00 Sandyhill Lane junc with Landseer Road Landseer Road into town, you've got the site near the MOT centre, BUT the favourite is to sit in Sandyhill Lane, hidden by bushes. They've got a clear view across the dip to top of the far rise. White boxes on Landseer Road but by then it's too late! Plus the sneaky bastards also park in Lister Locks carpark, same vantage point as above - but impossible to see if you're heading into town. - fred 21/2/00 You have the site near the MOT station on Landseer Road, but a liitle further down the hill (towards town), the fuzz often park in Sandyhill Lane. You cannot see them heading out of town, ie up Landseer, as they're hidden by bushes/trees. There are two white painted boxes on the Landseer road, so you have little chance. More sinister and again virtually impossible to spot - at the junction of Sandyhill Lane and Landseer there's a Company called Lister Locks and they park in their car park. Same outcome an uninterrupted view down the main road. Sometimes this is backed up with a second car parked either on the top of the hill down by Tollys Brewery, or slightly further on - on the left in the lay by by the entrance to the brewery yard. Moral of all this - if you're speeding - don't on this road the odds are well against you. - fred 24/2/00
